Choli Tops

Rajasthani Choli Projects

Stunningly beautiful vintage style mirrored Rajasthani Cholis, made from heavy cotton in fabulous vibrant shades evoking the exotic colours of India.

The women of Rajasthan traditionally wear these backless cholis, along with a ghagra or lehanga, a pleated skirt. The back and midriff are left bare and a length of cotton cloth or dupatta is worn over the head and flowing down the back, secured at the waist. This allows air to circulate around the centre of the body, a great way to keep cool.

Most of these cholis are made for small-framed women and will need altering to fit Western figures properly. They are put together in traditional folk costume style. Fabric is a precious commodity, so none is wasted cutting curves or intricate shapes.

The choli design uses squares and rectangles. This makes altering less complicated. Hand sewn top stitching and embroidery will often form part of the design, so alterations are easily incorporated.

These cholis are old, showing wear and tear in places, and need altering to fit. They are suitable for the enthusiast who is handy with a needle and thread, and are looking for a project to create a unique piece of costume.
