Tsunami Relief -
Batticalowa Sri Lanka
(Pictures by kind permission of the Amma Lamai Foundation)
Boxing Day 2004 brought devastation to the communities around the Indian Ocean. One of the areas particularly affected was the East Coast of Sri Lanka, where whole sections of the community were killed and livelihoods destroyed.
I first met Tina in 1992 in Sri Lanka. An aid worker with the Amma Lamai Foundation, Tina works with young single mothers and orphans, offering the shelter and support often denied them in their home communities.
When the tsunami struck, Tina immediately travelled to the East Coast regions to start work with the orphaned children and distressed families in the area. She reported that families were living in tents and makeshift accommodation, and temperatures were reaching a sweltering 40 degrees C.
Dancers in the Midlands raised funds in Spring 2005 for Sri Lanka at LA Fitness in Northfield organised by Nichola Fairey, and Lichfield dancers donated costume items for sale at auction. At the Pedralta spring hafla in Lichfield, dancers from Stafford and Birmingham joined us. The money raised was also donated.
Tina is a very practical person with excellent local knowledge. I sent the donations raised straight to her, knowing that the funds would go directly to where they could be put to immediate use.
Here is the result.
The funds you raised have paid for the tables and chairs in these buildings.
Nice one!
