Devil Mask Dancers
(Trance Dance - Sri Lanka)
Originating from the coastal regions south of Colombo in southern Sri Lanka, this ritualistic dance evolved from folk rituals. Used to drive away evil spirits and sometimes as a method of psychiatric treatment or exorcism.
The wooded 'devil masks' represent demons.
As the dance gets going, the drummer sets a hypnotic rhythm on the special 'demon drum' and the dancers start spinning by rotating their torsos in increasing speed until they achieve their awe inspiring finale.
